It it interesting how even in New England where they were fighting against slavery, there is still such a strong sentiment of racism amongst many of the people. I also found it a little ironic that it seems as though even such characters as the Doctor, Julian, are portrayed as more accepting and less racist as many others in the town, they seemed to have accepted Lola on the condition that her skin pigment was only temporarily dark and make it a point to bring up her "pure Spanish blood" all the time. Even Lola at one point makes a comment to Julian that is racially negative directed at herself. I wonder how much they would have accepted her had she not been of purely white blood.Emily Hagerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13348233885713238939noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8054491558770742793.post-48497450217473371392008-09-09T22:18:00.000-07:002008-09-09T22:18:00.000-07:00You make a good point, she's not so much a distinc...You make a good point, she's not so much a distinct character but moreso a reflection of the typical American mindset at the time.saucey boyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11510732912942090133noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8054491558770742793.post-27820417808764238612008-09-09T20:46:00.000-07:002008-09-09T20:46:00.000-07:00Estoy de acuerdo, pobrecita Lolita!Lola utters onl...Estoy de acuerdo, pobrecita Lolita!

Lola utters only a few sentences but her love and care for those who matter shines through. I admire Lola's courage for leaving Mr.Hackwell to attend Julian even though it was against Mrs.Norval's orders.AnnaChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01810875543692718511noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8054491558770742793.post-76907648314738428992008-09-08T19:35:00.000-07:002008-09-08T19:35:00.000-07:00I like how you took a look at Lola's perspective r...I like how you took a look at Lola's perspective right from the beginning. It's very interesting to think about because so far she's a character without much of her own voice. The majority of her stories is told through others discussion.Maxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06361256109525697218noreply@blogger.com
